Dr Alison Grimaldi
Physiotherapist | Researcher | Educator
Prerequisites
- These workshops open to registered health professionals — primarily physiotherapists, but also osteopaths and medical doctors with a clinical interest in hip pain. It is suitable for clinicians at all stages of their career, from those new to hip assessment through to experienced practitioners who would like to deepen their anatomical foundations.
- Each of the workshop is designed as a stand-alone event — no prior attendance at any Dr Grimaldi workshop is required. However, it is particularly powerful when the Cadavaric Workshop is combined with the Anterior Hip and Groin Pain, and Lateral Hip and Buttock Pain clinical workshop.
- The three workshops are sold independently and can be booked in any combination.

Course Schedule
HIP ANATOMY UNLOCKED - A CADAVERIC WORKSHOP (7.5H) :
DISSECTION WORKSHOP + LECTURE (7.5 h)
- The day is structured around two parallel lecture and laboratory sessions — morning for the anterior hip and groin, afternoon for the lateral hip and buttock.
- Each lecture prepares you for the laboratory session that follows, so you walk into the dissecting room already oriented to what you are looking for.
- In the laboratory, participants rotate through four stations, each with a different specimen focus.
- Initially, a demonstrator at each station will familiarise you with the key features of note in the specimens at that station. This will be followed by some free time to work through questions provided on laminated cards, designed to both test your new knowledge and stimulate clinical reflection. Don't worry — there will be answers provided, and four demonstrators, including Dr Alison Grimaldi, will remain available to facilitate observation, answer questions, and prompt further clinical reflection.
- Course will be hosted from 9 - 4.30pm including break for lunch and 2 breaks for refreshments.
- Registration open at 8.30 am

Course Outline
HIP ANATOMY UNLOCKED - A CADAVERIC WORKSHOP 11.09.2026:
PRACTICAL FACE TO FACE (7.5h):
- A focused lecture on the anatomical foundations of the anterior hip and groin region prepares you for the laboratory session.
ANTERIOR HIP AND GROIN PAIN WORKSHOP 12.09.2026:
ONLINE LESSONS (5h POWER POINT PRESENTATION):
This anterior hip and groin pain online workshop aims to assist you in better recognising, assessing and managing a range of anterior hip and groin pain conditions, including:
- Pain associated with hip chondral pathology and labral tears
- Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome (FAIS)
- Extra-articular impingement (AIIS impingement, subspine impingement)
- Anterior hip instability associated with acetabular dysplasia and/or capsuloligamentous deficiency (hypermobility/EDS, trauma, iatrogenic)
- Anterior hip pain associated with femoral malversion (excessive femoral anteversion or femoral retroversion
- Hip osteoarthritis
- Hip flexor related pain, iliopsoas tendinopathy/iliopsoas bursitis
- Groin pain with focus on adductor related groin pain
- Nerve related anterior hip pain
PRACTICAL ANTERIOR HIP AND GROIN WORKSHOP (8h) :
Diagnostic, pain provocation tests for intra and extra-articular sources of nociception
- Assessment of bony morphology, joint stability and neurodynamics
- Assessment of posture and key movement patterns for specific pain ans load intolerance presentations
- Examples of treatment direction tests (passive and active) and clinical reasoning strategies to determine best approach for reducing pain and improving load tolerance for the patient’s specific presentation
Practical management strategies
- Manual therapy – useful techniques for specific range gaining and improving painfree range of motion will be demonstrated
- Learn some novel and effective nerve mobilisation exercises for the anterior hip region
A primary focus will be load management advice and key exercise strategies for specific presentations related to a wide range of hip conditions:
- Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome (FAIS) and extra-articular impingement (AIIS impingement, subspine impingement)
- Anterior hip instability associated with acetabular dysplasia and/or capsuloligamentous deficiency (hypermobility/EDS, trauma, iatrogenic)
- Anterior hip pain associated with femoral malversion (excessive femoral anteversion or femoral retroversion
- Hip osteoarthritis
- Hip flexor related pain, iliopsoas tendinopathy/iliopsoas bursitis, anterior snapping hip
- Groin pain with focus on adductor related groin pain
- Nerve related anterior hip pain
LATERAL HIP AND BUTTOCK PAIN 13.09.2026:
ONLINE LESSONS (6h POWER POINT PRESENTATION):
The online component aims to:
- Clarify definitions and diagnoses of lateral hip and buttock pain
- Explore factors which may influence loads across the lateral hip & buttock and predispose to intra or extra-articular impingement, such as:
- morphological variants (e.g., bony structure, soft tissue – neural relationships)
- adverse soft tissue loading associated with kinematics and neuromotor function (focus on hip abductors and short external rotators).
- Provide an overview of key load management and therapeutic exercise strategies for lateral hip and buttock pain, particular to the patient presentation and associated difficulties with mechanical load transfer.
- Provide an update on scientific evidence for underlying diagnostic and management approaches
-
The practical workshop will guide participants through diagnostic tests and management strategies for lateral hip and buttock pain. There is now high-quality evidence for assessment and management of gluteal tendinopathy from the ‘LEAP’ lateral hip pain randomised clinical trial, of which Alison was a key investigator.
- Participants will receive first-hand instruction on techniques, advice regarding how best to apply this approach in clinical practice and valuable troubleshooting for slow or non-responders.
- The workshop with then delve into the other lesser-known problems associated with buttock pain that may present diagnostic and management challenges – posterior joint instability, bony impingements, peripheral nerve entrapments and musculotendinous overload. Understanding the impact of bony morphology, soft tissue interfaces and postural and movement patterns is critical to optimal management of these conditions.
The one-day practical workshop will include:
Diagnostic tests, management strategies and key exercises for:
- gluteal tendinopathy & associated soft tissue pathologies (Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome – GTPS)
- posterior femoroacetabular impingement
- posterior hip joint instability
- extra articular impingements *ischiofemoral impingement
- deep gluteal syndrome/extraspinal sciatica
- proximal hamstring tendinopathy
